If you want to attract butterflies to your garden, you will definitely want to start some Butterfly Weed plants! This particular orange variety, Asclepias tuberosa, is commonly called Gay Butterflies, and it produces an abundance of flower clusters in bright shades of red, yellow and orange. Monarch butterflies are especially fond of Butterfly Weed, but many different varieties of butterflies find its nectar to be irresistible! This plant also has a long bloom-season, and it makes a great cut flower as well. Butterfly Weed is hardy and will provide years of beauty and nectar for butterflies. It does well with heat, drought and winter cold. Grow this plant in full sun and in sharply-drained, gritty soils. Sow the seed indoors in early spring. Maintain a temperature of 60F. Press the seeds into the soil, but do not cover them. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs. Germination normally takes place within 42 days. Transplant the young plants outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Space the plants 24 inches apart.
